Synagogue of Leicester, Leicester

Synagogue of Leicester, Leicester

The Synagogue of Leicester, standing proudly on Highfields Street, is more than just a place of worship-it’s a testament to the resilience and contribution of Leicester’s Jewish community. Established in 1898, the synagogue was a much-needed upgrade for a growing congregation that had outgrown its rented spaces. The building owes much to Israel Hart, a prominent Jewish businessman and four-time Lord Mayor of Leicester, who, alongside other local Jewish entrepreneurs, financed the construction.

Designed by Arthur Wakerley, a celebrated architect and former mayor, the synagogue carries a distinctive Byzantine-inspired dome, reflecting his fascination with the "Orient." If you’re familiar with Leicester’s architectural landscape, you might recognize similar motifs on the Turkey Café on Granby Street, another of Wakerley’s works.

The synagogue narrowly escaped destruction during a bombing raid in 1940, when the surrounding buildings were obliterated. Tragically, 19 members of the Jewish community lost their lives that night, including refugees who had just arrived in Leicester seeking safety from the London Blitz.

Beyond its religious function, the synagogue has adapted to modern times. Its historic school rooms first added in 1901, have been transformed into a Heritage Centre, thanks to support from the National Heritage Lottery Fund. Visitors can now explore the history of Leicester’s Jewish community, Jewish traditions, and religious practices, with exhibits featuring Torah Scrolls and a mikvah (ritual bath).

For over a century, the Synagogue of Leicester has stood as a symbol of faith, survival, and community-a piece of history tucked away in the heart of the city.
