Tacoma Nature Center, Tacoma
The Tacoma Nature Center is a 71-acre park that provides an escape from city life without leaving town. The park features a network of trails, including a main 1-mile loop around a narrow lake, which is wheelchair accessible on the west side. Snake Lake, a 17-acre wetland area within the preserve, is crossed by two bridges and is home to various waterfowl, such as wood ducks, mallards, and Canada geese.
The park's flora includes noble firs, red-trunked madrones, ferns, and salal, while the fauna ranges from chipmunks and squirrels to more exotic creatures like red foxes and blue herons. In autumn, visitors might encounter territorial barred owls. The park is surrounded by Cheney Stadium, Highway 16, Bellarmine High, and South 19th Street, so traffic noise is present, but the trails remain peaceful and soft underfoot.
The best times to visit are early in the morning or late in the day, with weekends being particularly quiet in winter. The visitor center offers maps and information. There are three self-guided walks available: the Wetland Walk, History Walk, and Forest Walk, which can be combined into a figure-eight loop. The Forest Walk includes a slight elevation gain but is otherwise mostly flat, winding through a forest dominated by Douglas Fir, Pacific Madrone, Black Cottonwood, Sitka alder, and Garry Oak.
