Tacoma Nature Center, Tacoma

Tacoma Nature Center, Tacoma

Tacoma Nature Center is a 71-acre nature preserve built around Snake Lake, a narrow wetland shaped long ago by glaciers. The lake gets its name from its long, winding form, which looks a bit like a snake through the marsh. The area has wetlands, woods, open water, and soft walking trails, giving visitors a calm natural break in the middle of a developed area. More than two miles of trails run through the preserve, along with a shorter wheelchair-accessible outdoor route.

Snake Lake has a long local history. Native communities once used the wetlands for berries, bulbs, shoots, and reeds. Later, the Tacoma-Lake City Railway passed nearby, and the area became a winter skating spot. In 1908, two boys drowned after falling through thin ice. In the 20th century, conservationists helped protect the lake from road plans, leading to a bridge over the south end instead.

The Nature Center was dedicated in 1979 after years of conservation work. In its early years, first manager Bob Ramsey reportedly ran park operations from the trunk of his Honda station wagon. Today, it offers trails, nature education, and protected habitat, with birds, turtles, amphibians, small mammals, wetland plants, and sometimes colourful wood ducks. Inside, visitors can see a live honeybee hive through glass, while outdoor photo stations help track seasonal changes.
