Tallinna Teletorn (TV tower), Tallinn
The Tallinn TV Tower (Tallinna Teletorn) is a standalone structure featuring an observation deck. It was constructed to enhance telecommunications during the 1980 Moscow Summer Olympics sailing competition. Situated in close proximity to the Pirita suburb, approximately six kilometers northeast of downtown Tallinn, it stands as the tallest building in the city.
The observation deck, situated on the 21st floor, was initially intended to have a rotating section and is positioned at an elevation of 170 meters above ground, boasting a 38-meter diameter. The tower was officially inaugurated on July 11, 1980. However, the public access to the viewing platform at 170 meters was closed for renovation on November 26, 2007. It was subsequently reopened on April 5, 2012, with a completely revamped interior design by KOKO Arhitektid.
Local guidebooks promote the panoramic views from the observation deck, encompassing Tallinn and extending out to the Gulf of Finland. The tower retains a distinct 1980s Soviet ambiance and houses a restaurant on the observation floor. Notably, there are still visible bullet holes at the base of the tower, remnants of the Soviet coup attempt in 1991.
