Tanger Family Bicentennial Garden, Greensboro

Tanger Family Bicentennial Garden, Greensboro

The Tanger Family Bicentennial Garden in Greensboro is a lush, 7.5-acre public retreat brimming with natural beauty, local history, and artistic charm. Established in 1976 to commemorate the United States Bicentennial, the garden transformed a once-overgrown floodplain into a peaceful green space, thanks to the efforts of Greensboro Beautiful and the City’s Parks and Recreation Department.

From the moment you enter, you’re greeted by paved pathways winding through vibrant displays of annuals, perennials, flowering trees, and canopy-shaded corners. A re-circulating man-made stream adds a tranquil soundtrack, while artistic and historic sculptures-including the once-central life-sized bronze figure The Student-tell stories of Greensboro’s colonial past.

The garden sits on land once home to Rev. Dr. David Caldwell, a pioneering educator, physician, and minister. His "Log College," founded in 1767, once stood nearby, and the adjacent David Caldwell Historic Park offers further interpretation of his legacy, featuring an educational center opened in 2007.

A romantic gazebo stands at the heart of the garden, accommodating up to 100 guests and serving as a sought-after wedding venue. In 2017, a working Old Mill with a water wheel was added, paying homage to a historic mill Caldwell operated on the site in the 1780s.

Over the years, the garden has seen enhancements guided by a Master Plan-new entryways, sensory gardens, stone walls, additional sculptures, and better accessibility have all been introduced. In 2006, it was renamed in honor of Stanley and Doris Tanger, whose generous support continues to shape the space.

Today, the Tanger Family Bicentennial Garden is open daily, offering a serene spot for strolling, reflection, and community events-all just minutes from the bustle of the city.
