Chrysler Museum of Art, Norfolk

Chrysler Museum of Art, Norfolk (must see)

Begining as the Norfolk Museum of Arts and Sciences in 1933, the institution took its current name in 1971 after a transformational gift: most of Walter P. Chrysler Jr.’s extensive personal collection was donated to the museum by Chrysler, including ancient artifacts, European and American painting and sculpture, Cubist and modernist works, an extensive glass collection, and pioneering photography.

Today, the museum boasts a remarkable collection of over 35,000 objects spanning 5,000 years. Among its prized works are masterpieces by Tintoretto, Bernini, Manet, Matisse, Pollock, Warhol. and an exceptional. Amoung its remarkable pieces of art are a marble bust of Jesus Christ sculpted by the Baroque master Bernini and "Salvator Rosa Sketching the Banditi” by Thomas Moran, renowed for the Romantic portrayal of Salvator Rosa-a celebrated Baroque artist.

The museum has expanded into a broader campus that is home to the Perry Glass Studio, where guests can watch live glassblowing and take part in educational programs; the Goode Works on Paper Center, dedicated to studying prints, drawings, and photographs; and the Moses Myers House, an early 19th-century Federal-style residence that offers a glimpse into the lives of one of Norfolk’s earliest Jewish families.

The museum features over 50 galleries, a café, museum shop, and a performance courtyard used for events. It hosts rotating exhibitions-from Rembrandt etchings to contemporary American and African American art-and offers guided tours, lectures, family programs, and community outreach.
