Telephone Kiosks, Blackpool

Telephone Kiosks, Blackpool

Blackpool, England, is home to one of the most striking displays of Britain's classic red telephone boxes-the K6 kiosks designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott in 1935. These iconic cast iron boxes, with their domed roofs and signature red finish, were originally introduced to mark King George V’s Silver Jubilee. Though once a common feature across the country, Blackpool's collection stands out both in number and preservation.

The most prominent group is found outside the former General Post Office on Abingdon Street, where eight K6 kiosks stand in a proud row. These have been Grade II listed since 1988, recognized for both their distinctive design and historical significance. Another smaller grouping can be found in Talbot Square, near Blackpool’s Town Hall, also listed for their heritage value.

While mobile phones have largely replaced the public payphone, Blackpool’s telephone boxes remain in place-not for communication, but for culture. They serve as beloved relics of a bygone era, connecting visitors to a piece of British identity and design history. Their continued presence along Blackpool’s streets offers a charming visual link to the past and contributes to the town’s nostalgic seaside character.

Visitors can admire these kiosks as part of a leisurely walk through Blackpool’s historic center, where past and present meet with a splash of bright red.

Since early days, folks sought the benefits of fresh sea air and water.
