Templo de Nuestra Senora de La Salud (Church of Our Lady of Health), San Miguel de Allende

The Church of Our Lady of Health stands as a unique gem among the Latin American churches that often embrace a somber and martyrdom-focused atmosphere. Unlike its counterparts that frequently delve into the art of suffering, "La Salud" offers a refreshing departure. It reminds visitors that Christianity encompasses not only the agonies of Calvary but also the joys of celebrations like the banquet at Cana and the miraculous multiplication of loaves and fish.

The church's radiance is particularly enchanting when the night falls, and its façade comes alive with illuminations that grace Plaza Allende. Situated on Calle Insurgentes near the new plaza, the church easily catches the eye with its distinctive hallmark – a large, intricately carved shell perched above the main entrance.

The façade's aesthetic is characterized by meticulous and primitive stonework. Adorning the niches around the main doors are sculptures honoring Saint Joachim, Saint Anne, the Sacred Heart, and Saint John the Evangelist. Just above the entrance, a statue pays homage to the Immaculate Conception, while skillfully crafted local ironwork adorns the wooden doors. Though often referred to as "churrigueresque," a term rooted in Spain's extravagant architectural style between 1688 and 1700, the façade's design is more understated and cleaner than the word suggests.

Stepping inside the compact interior, one discovers that stone altars have taken the place of their gold and gilt predecessors – a minor trade-off given the church's airy and glamorous ambiance. The true charm of the Church of Our Lady of Health is born from the harmony of contrasting yet cheerful colors and the absence of the grotesque accents that sometimes haunt Mexican churches.
