The Church and the Hospital of the Hospitaller Brothers of St. John of God, Pecs
The Church and the Hospital of the Hospitaller Brothers of Saint John of God in Pecs stand as a testament to centuries of religious, artistic, and medical history. Originally constructed by Capuchin friars, the church was completed in 1727, followed by the adjoining monastery in 1731. The building complex has undergone numerous transformations over the years, adapting to changing times while preserving its rich heritage.
The facade of the church is defined by three sections separated by pillars, with a tower rising from the middle. A statue of the Virgin Mary, sculpted by Gyorgy Kis, enhances the central section. The church interior features a single nave with a barrel vault and a rectangular sanctuary. Among its most notable artistic elements is the main altar, which exhibits intricate inlays and an Italian Baroque depiction of the martyrdom of Saint Sebastian. A square chapel, positioned on the western side, adds to the architectural charm of the church.
The transition to medical care began in 1796 when Pecs tanner established a foundation for a Hospitaller hospital. This initiative led to the expansion of the facility, which was enlarged in 1873 to accommodate 40 patients. The pharmacy's ground-floor facade, completed in 1928, remains a visible feature of the complex. In 1940-41, a two-story hospital was built using elements of the old hospital, based on the designs of Karoly Haraszti.
The church's artistic embellishments reflect both Baroque and later influences. In 1908, Ede Graits painted copies of Tiepolo’s works on the church vault. A relief of Saint John, created by Ede Mayer, adorns the church wall facing Irgalmasok Street. The organ, a product of the Angster Organ Factory of Pecs, is another highlight of the church’s interior.
Despite its many transformations, the Church and Hospital of the Hospitaller Brothers continue to stand as a significant landmark, embodying the religious, artistic, and medical traditions that have shaped Pécs over the centuries.
