The Church of St. Peter and St. John the Baptist, Bonn

The Church of St. Peter and St. John the Baptist, Bonn

The Church of Saint Peter and Saint John the Baptist was built between 1879 and 1886 in a neo-Gothic style and designed by architect Heinrich Wiethase, serving as the principal parish church for one of Bonn’s oldest congregations. Its commanding twin-tower façade and pointed-arch windows contribute significantly to Bonn’s cityscape and reflect the grandeur of late 19th-century ecclesiastical architecture.

Step inside and you’ll be greeted by an three-aisled nave supported by sturdy columns and surmounted by ribbed vaulting-an impressive interior arrangement achieved during the extensive rebuilding phase. The church suffered considerable damage during World War II, but restoration projects conducted between the 1950s and 1970s successfully revived its original neo-Gothic character. Visitors particularly admire the Madonna of Dietkirchen-a 14th-century statue-as well as richly detailed stained glass and sculptural altarpieces.

Beyond its architectural and artistic appeal, the church remains an active centre of worship and community. Regular Masses, concerts, and cultural events enliven the space, making it both a religious landmark and a lively gathering place.
