The Conchada Cemetery, Coimbra

Nestled in Coimbra’s Conchada neighborhood, the Conchada Cemetery is the city's first municipal cemetery, dating back to 1860. While modern residential buildings now surround it, this burial ground remains a significant site of memory and artistic expression. The cemetery is an open-air gallery of remarkable sculptures and architectural styles, with many of the graves showcasing intricate stonework crafted by Coimbra’s finest artists. Among its most imposing monuments is the grand tomb of the Counts of Ameal, a striking example of 19th-century funerary grandeur. One of its defining features is the presence of narrow Neo-Gothic mausoleums, exhibiting two distinct layouts-some with front entrances, others with access from the back.
