The Contemporary Austin Jones Center, Austin

The Contemporary Austin Jones Center, Austin

The Contemporary Austin showcases a wide range of modern art through its exhibitions, commissioned artworks, educational initiatives, and its collection. The museum operates from two separate but interconnected locations: the Jones Center in the downtown area and Laguna Gloria, a scenic fourteen-acre property situated by Lake Austin.

Known in the local community as "The Contemporary," this institution has undergone a significant transformation since its establishment in 1911. Originally founded as the Texas Fine Arts Association (TFAA), it has evolved over time. Initially, it acquired the Laguna Gloria Art Museum and later the Jones Center for Contemporary Art, which was eventually renamed as Arthouse at the Jones Center. The Contemporary Austin emerged as a result of the merger between the long-standing AMOA-Arthouse, bringing together two prominent venues: Laguna Gloria and the Jones Center, each with its own distinct offerings and historical backgrounds.

The Contemporary Austin – Jones Center building, a creation of architect Paul Lewis from the firm Lewis.Tsurumaki.Lewis, spans two levels dedicated to showcasing art and features a remarkable rooftop space named the Moody Rooftop. This area is not only a venue for displaying art-related films and live performances but also hosts family-friendly activities and guided tours. Additionally, it's a sought-after location for some of the city's most inventive private gatherings.

Upon your arrival at The Contemporary Austin – Jones Center, your attention is immediately captured by an impressive art installation prominently displayed above the building, easily seen from the street. This renowned piece, "With Liberty and Justice for All (A Work in Progress)" by Jim Hodges, perfectly introduces the kind of art you will encounter inside. The center offers a constantly changing lineup of exhibits spread across almost 8,000 square feet.
