The Nottingham Playhouse, Nottingham
Nottingham Playhouse is a leading producing theatre located in Nottingham. Originally established as a repertory theatre in 1948 in a former cinema on Goldsmith Street, it moved to its iconic purpose-built venue on Wellington Circus in 1963. Designed by modernist architect Peter Moro-known for his work on the Royal Festival Hall-the building stirred controversy for its stark contrast to the neighboring Gothic Revival Roman Catholic cathedral. Nevertheless, it earned a Civic Trust Award in 1965 and was later granted Grade II* listed status in 1996. A sensitive restoration in 2004 revived its architectural character, following decades of unsympathetic alterations.
The Playhouse features a 770-seat proscenium auditorium and a 160-seat outdoor Djanogly Terrace, home to Anish Kapoor’s striking Sky Mirror sculpture, now one of Nottingham’s most beloved landmarks. The theatre has welcomed countless celebrated performers over the decades, from Dame Judi Dench and Sir Ian McKellen to Vicky McClure and Mark Gatiss, while also nurturing emerging talent through its renowned Amplify program.
In recent years, Nottingham Playhouse has earned accolades including The Stage’s Regional Theatre of the Year (2019), UK Theatre’s Most Welcoming Theatre (2023), and Theatre of the Year (2025). With a year-round program of classics, bold new works, and inclusive community initiatives, Nottingham Playhouse remains a vibrant cultural hub where storytelling, innovation, and belonging go hand in hand.
