Tiara Dewata, Denpasar

Tiara Dewata is remembered as one of Bali’s early modern shopping centres, opened in the mid-1980s under PT Karya Luhur Permai. Before larger malls became common on the island, it helped popularise one-stop shopping by combining a supermarket, department store, food court, amusement area, swimming pool, and community space. For many local families, it was not just a shopping place, but a regular weekend destination.

Its appeal came from combining shopping with everyday recreation. The amusement area, especially the bom-bom kar, or bumper cars, became a strong childhood memory for those who grew up in the 1980s and 1990s. The swimming pool was another unusual feature for a retail centre, often drawing families on Sundays. Its food court was known for variety and affordability, with Padang, Balinese, Japanese, Western, and casual snack options sharing the same lively space.

Tiara Dewata also holds a place in Bali’s retail history as a strong local market player that supported Indonesian brands and reflected local shopping habits. Even after its original complex closed in 2022, the name continued through smaller branches, preserving its legacy of shopping, food, family recreation, and shared memory.
