Pasar Malam Kereneng, or Kereneng Night Market, is one of Bali’s long-running local markets, known for its evening food stalls and everyday neighbourhood atmosphere. Its name is often linked to a Balinese woven bamboo basket once used for wrapping and carrying goods. Near the entrance, two large guardian-like statues give the market a ceremonial note, reflecting local beliefs about protection, prosperity, and balance in a place of trade.

During the day, the wider market area works more like a traditional market and transport point, with vendors selling household goods, clothing, produce, and daily necessities, while minibuses and motorbikes add to the movement around the site. As evening arrives, the focus shifts to cooked food, snacks, and casual meals. Locals often describe this type of place as a “bumping market,” a fitting name for its narrow lanes, close crowds, and shoulder-to-shoulder browsing.

The night market is especially known for street food. Stalls may serve mixed rice dishes, satay skewers, fried noodles, soups, grilled meats, sweet pancakes, tropical fruit, and colourful drinks. Visitors can also find Balinese sweets made with sticky rice, coconut, palm sugar, rice flour, or banana, along with modern snacks such as steamed corn with milk and cheese. The upper level often sells peanuts, crackers, and other market treats in bulk.

Visitors should expect a lively, informal environment rather than a polished tourist market. It is best explored with small cash, simple clothing, and patience for crowds, especially after sunset, when food stalls take over. The main entrance can be packed with motorbikes, so quieter access points may be easier. Street performers sometimes add to the scene, while the main impression comes from quick meals, local conversation, trade, and constant movement.
