Puputan Badung Square, Denpasar

Puputan Badung Square, Denpasar (must see)

Puputan Badung Square, also known as I Gusti Ngurah Made Agung Square, is a public space shaped by one of Bali’s most serious historical memories. Its name refers to the Puputan Badung of September 20, 1906, when the local royal family and many followers chose a final act of resistance rather than surrender to Dutch colonial forces. The word puputan means “the end” or “fight to the finish,” and this meaning gives the square a weight that goes beyond its role as an open urban park.

The main bronze monument shows Balinese figures moving forward with weapons and ritual resolve. A closer look reveals the female figure holding jewellery in her left hand, recalling accounts of women throwing gold and valuables at Dutch soldiers in defiance. The raised poses and surrounding water create a strong visual focus, while the open square allows views from several sides.

The square also connects with older layers of Balinese spatial symbolism. Its paths are often linked with the cardinal directions, echoing the nearby Catur Muka Statue and its four outward-facing figures. Large banyan trees shade the walkways, while a recent renewal by Marmar Herayukti added guide blocks and braille descriptions for visually impaired visitors.

Today, the square is both a memorial and a living public space. Locals come here to walk, exercise, gather with children, or sit under the trees, while the outdoor chessboard often attracts players and spectators. Linked with ceremonies, cultural events, and the nearby kilometre-zero point, the square shows how public memory, daily life, and Balinese symbolism share one space.
