Timbuk2, San Francisco
Timbuk2, a bag manufacturer and marketer, is headquartered in San Francisco. Offering both pre-made and made-to-order bags, the company is currently under the ownership of the private equity group TB2 Investors. Notably, in 2014, Timbuk2 achieved the distinction of being ranked as the second-largest manufacturer in San Francisco by the esteemed San Francisco Business Times.
Founded in 1989 by bike messenger Rob Honeycutt in a San Francisco garage, Timbuk2 initially catered to custom orders from local bike dealers. Originally called Scumbags, the name changed to Timbuk2 Designs in 1990, inspired in part by the band Timbuk3. Manufacturing later expanded beyond San Francisco, with non-custom products made in China, Vietnam, and Indonesia.
The company's growth included the launch of a retail store in Hayes Valley, San Francisco, in 2006, followed by a Seattle location in 2013. Timbuk2 engaged in various sustainability efforts, incorporating recycled materials and promoting bag reuse and recycling through the Timbuk2 Life Cycle program.
In 2014, Timbuk2 expanded its retail presence to Chicago, Denver, Los Angeles, and Toronto, while also collaborating with Blue Bottle Coffee Company for a coffee travel kit. The company continued to forge partnerships, teaming up with New Balance in 2016.
