Torre del Parco (Park Tower), Lecce

Torre del Parco (Park Tower), Lecce

Park Tower is a historic landmark, embodying the city’s medieval and Renaissance heritage. Built in 1419 by Giovanni Antonio Orsini Del Balzo, the tower is a captivating example of fortified architecture from the early 15th century. Although there is no definitive documentation confirming the exact founding date, tradition holds that it was constructed by Orsini Del Balzo, who was the son of Raimondello, Prince of Taranto.

Standing over 23 meters tall, the tower is built on three levels with vaulted ceilings and is surrounded by a moat. The moat, historically used to house bears-the heraldic symbol of the Orsini family-adds to the unique charm of the structure.

Over the centuries, the tower has served multiple purposes, including functioning as a prison between 1458 and 1461, where prisoners left engravings on the walls that can still be seen today. Following the death of Giovanni Antonio, the tower became the residence of various governors of Lecce.

In 1992, after being sold to a private company, Torre del Parco underwent extensive restoration.

Today, it serves as a venue for events, ceremonies, and receptions, offering visitors a glimpse into Lecce's rich history. The surrounding convent garden provides a peaceful oasis in the midst of the city, further enhancing the tower’s allure as a historical and cultural treasure.
