Torre Prendiparte (Prendiparte Tower), Bologna

The Prendiparte Tower was erected in the 12th century by the Guelph Prendiparte family as a defensive stronghold. Rising approximately 60 meters above the surrounding streets, it is Bologna’s third-tallest medieval tower after the Asinelli Tower and Altabella Tower.

Built mainly of characteristic red brick and strengthened at its base with large blocks of selenite, the tower retains the austere appearance of a medieval fortress. It contains 12 floors, now connected by restored stairways. Although constructed by the Prendiparte family, the tower later passed through several owners before being acquired in the 16th century by Cardinal Gabriele Paleotti. It subsequently became part of the Archdiocesan Seminary and, in 1751, was converted into the archbishop’s prison for people accused of offenses against religion or Christian morality.

Evidence of this period survives on the third, fourth, and fifth floors, which once contained prison cells. Their walls preserve reddish inscriptions, drawings, and graffiti left by former inmates. Toward the end of the 18th century, after Bologna came under French control, the lowest floors were adapted as living quarters. Larger windows and other structural alterations were introduced to make the previously defensive interior more suitable for habitation.

Visitors who climb the steep but secure staircases through all 12 levels eventually reach the rooftop terrace. Protected by high parapets, it provides wide-ranging views across Bologna’s red-tiled roofs, medieval towers, surrounding plains, and the hills to the south.

No longer used for defense or imprisonment, the tower has taken on a very different role. Today, it operates as an unusual guesthouse and private event venue, offering overnight stays and romantic occasions within one of Bologna’s best-preserved medieval towers.
