Treibhaus, Innsbruck
Treibhaus, situated in Innsbruck, is a significant cultural center that has greatly enriched the city's artistic scene since its inception. It originated as an extension of the independent cultural center KOMM, associated with the cultural department of the Austrian Student Union in Innsbruck, established in 1977. The Treibhaus Association was formally established in 1981 by Norbert K. Pleifer, who remains its leader today. It succeeded KOMM, initially based on Anzengruberstraße in the Pradl district, before moving to a more central location near Innsbruck's old town in 1986.
The cultural center is renowned as a focal point for diverse artistic endeavors, especially music events such as jazz and world music, as well as cabaret, theater, and other forms of art. Additionally, it operates as a catering establishment, adding a social dimension to its cultural offerings. The opening in 1981 featured performances by acclaimed jazz musician Werner Pirchner and the Vienna Art Orchestra, establishing its reputation for high-quality artistic expression from the start.
Originally, Treibhaus established itself as a gathering place for young people, drawing comparisons to Vienna's Arena by the Innsbruck City News in 1985. However, its relocation in 1986 to a distinctive dark octagonal building, designed by architects Rainer Köberl, Raimund Rainer, and Gerhard Manzl, signaled a broader ambition. This move not only placed Treibhaus at the center of Innsbruck but also symbolized its role as a stronghold of resistance and creativity.
Expanding its cultural footprint further, since 1995, Treibhaus has organized an open-air film festival in collaboration with Leokino Cinematograph. This festival, held in the armory courtyard, offers a unique cinematic experience under the stars and adds another dimension to Treibhaus's comprehensive cultural programming.
