Union Meetinghouse, Montpelier

Union Meetinghouse, Montpelier

The Union Meetinghouse, also known as the Old Meeting House or the East Montpelier Center Meeting House, is the oldest surviving church building in the greater Montpelier area, dating to 1823–1826. Built during the Federal period, it reflects the restrained symmetry and balanced proportions typical of early American civic and religious architecture.

From its beginnings, the structure served a shared purpose, hosting multiple Protestant denominations under one roof while also functioning as a centre of civic life, where town meetings were held for decades. Its enduring historical and architectural value was formally recognised with its listing on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.

Set near the geographic heart of what would later become Montpelier and East Montpelier, the meetinghouse was constructed on land donated by early settler and surveyor Parley Davis, who envisioned the area as a future town centre. The building’s design remains notably intact, with its clapboard exterior, gabled roof, and distinctive tiered tower rising above a modest entrance pavilion. Over time, its role evolved alongside the community: from a shared house of worship and civic gathering place to a quieter period of decline in the early 20th century, followed by a revival in 1965 with the creation of a non-denominational congregation.
