United States Post Office and Federal Building, Wichita
The United States Post Office and Federal Building is an impressive example of Depression-era civic architecture, constructed between 1930 and 1932 at a cost of approximately $1.2 million. Designed by Supervising Architect James A. Wetmore and built by Murch Brothers, this U-shaped, steel-framed structure is clad in Bedford limestone. It stands three stories high, with a fourth story along its southern side-and marked by tower-like sections at each end.
The building originally housed the main post office on the first floor, with federal courtrooms and administrative offices on the upper levels. Tourists will appreciate the richly appointed first‐floor lobby, where period details such as marble-clad columns, brass moldings, coffered ceilings, and Depression-era murals remain remarkably intact. The artworks reflect a national effort to brighten public buildings and support artists during tough economic times .
Architecturally, the building is a fine example of the Moderne or Stripped Classical style-a streamlined version of Classical Revival. The building has a flat roof, a simple geometric shape, and minimal decoration. Its limestone exterior and corner towers give it a solid, official appearance typical of government buildings from the 1930s.
Today, as a functioning U.S. Courthouse and federal office building, it remains accessible to the public on weekdays. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places for its architecture and well-preserved interior.
