The Kansas African American Museum, Wichita

The Kansas African American Museum occupies a beautiful brick building that once served as the historic Calvary Baptist Church-a cornerstone of the city’s Black community since the late 19th century. Since opening its doors in 1997, the museum has emerged as the premier repository of African American art, culture, and history in Kansas, preserving and presenting artifacts, photographs, documents, and artworks that trace the resilience, creativity, and triumphs of Black Kansans.

The museum features a mix of ongoing and temporary exhibits that cover important periods in history, including the early years after the Civil War in Wichita and developments throughout the twentieth century. One recent exhibition, “Defining Black Wichita: New Horizons, 1970s–Today,” focuses on advances in civil rights, community leadership, and increased visibility in areas like politics, education, arts, and sports. The museum also offers dynamic programming-such as Senior Wednesdays featuring local historical speakers.
