University Museum and Art Gallery, Hong Kong

The University Museum holds the distinction of being the oldest museum in Hong Kong, established in 1953. Its premises are divided into two sections: the main museum, situated adjacent to the University of Hong Kong, and the art gallery, which occupies three floors of the T. T. Tsui Building. Connecting these two structures is a bridge.

Within the University Museum and Art Gallery, visitors can explore a notable collection of Chinese antiquities, including bronzes, ceramics, paintings, and wood carvings. Acquired and donated over the past six decades, these artifacts span from the Neolithic period to the Qing dynasty. Highlights of the collection encompass an early blue-and-white water pot and the world's largest compilation of Nestorian plaques.

Notably, the bronze collection showcases works from the Shang the Tang dynasty, alongside the world's most extensive assortment of Nestorian crosses from the Yuan dynasty. The museum also boasts a diverse array of jade, wood, and stone carvings, along with a collection of Chinese oil paintings. In recent times, the museum has expanded its purview to encompass historical photographs of Hong Kong and artifacts representing popular culture.

In addition to its permanent exhibits, the UMAG regularly hosts both contemporary and ancient art exhibitions. Situated near the east gate entrance of the University of Hong Kong, the University Museum and Art Gallery (UMAG) serves as an ideal destination for those seeking insight into Chinese history and the historical backdrop of the Hong Kong region.
