Vajiraramaya Temple, Colombo
Vajiraramaya Temple is a Buddhist temple that became important in the mid-20th century. It is closely linked to the revival of Buddhist learning and preaching during that time. Several well-known monks lived and taught here, and the temple gained a reputation as a place where Buddhism was explained in a clear and practical way. It also became connected with public discussions on religion and social values during periods of change in the country.
The temple complex is simple and easy to understand. A white stupa stands at the center, with preaching halls, shrine rooms, and monks’ living areas around it. Inside the main shrine, a seated Buddha statue is placed against painted walls that show scenes from the Buddha’s life and important moments in Buddhist history. The paintings focus on storytelling rather than decoration. Open courtyards and covered walkways create shaded areas and allow people to move quietly between buildings.
Vajiraramaya is still active today. Sermons, talks, and religious discussions are held regularly and are often attended by students and lay followers. Visitors usually come to observe rituals, listen to preaching, or spend time in quiet reflection. Modest dress and calm behavior are expected. The temple gives visitors a clear view of how Buddhist worship, learning, and daily religious life come together in one place.
