Barefoot Art Gallery, Colombo

Barefoot Art Gallery, Colombo

Barefoot Art Gallery opened under its current name in 1999, when it moved into its present space as part of a wider cultural complex focused on art, craft, and design. The gallery does not have a permanent collection. Instead, it hosts changing exhibitions that run for several weeks. Shows include painting, photography, textiles, printmaking, and mixed media by artists from Sri Lanka and the wider South Asian region.

The gallery space is simple and easy to move through. Neutral walls and even lighting keep attention on the artworks. The layout changes with each exhibition, based on the size and type of works shown. Some exhibitions follow a clear theme, while others are more open. Short wall texts explain the artists’ backgrounds and ideas in simple language, making the space easy to understand for all visitors.

Exhibitions often deal with everyday life, social issues, memory, nature, and identity. Traditional materials like handwoven textiles or handmade paper are often shown alongside photography and modern prints. The gallery supports both established and younger artists, and the calm setting encourages visitors to take their time.
