Van der Werf Park, Leiden
Van der Werf Park is a serene and historically significant green space in the heart of Leiden. Established in 1886, the park serves as a tranquil retreat for locals and visitors alike, offering a picturesque setting with pathways along the canal and spaces perfect for leisurely strolls or picnics.
The park stands on the site of the tragic gunpowder explosion of 1807, which left a lasting mark on Leiden’s history. Known as the "Grote Ruin," this open space was eventually transformed into a park by landscape architects J.D. Zocher Jr. and J.W. Schaap. Today, visitors can view a memorial stone across the canal, commemorating the explosion.
Van der Werf Park is named after Pieter Adriaanszoon Van der Werff, the mayor of Leiden during the Siege of Leiden in the Eighty Years' War. At the center of the park stands a statue of Mayor Van der Werff, erected in 1874 by the 3 October Association. This classicist sculpture rests on a square pedestal adorned with four bronze reliefs depicting key moments from Leiden's Relief. Surrounding the statue are eight yew trees and a restored mosaic bed representing Leiden’s coat of arms, a testament to the city's rich heritage.
The park has two entrances: one on the Garenmarkt and another on Doezastraat. The latter entrance is next to the charming tea house, (Theeschenkerij), which features an outdoor terrace during the summer. This spot offers an ideal place to relax with a cup of tea and a snack while enjoying the park’s serene atmosphere.
For families, Van der Werf Park is an excellent destination. Children can run and play in the open spaces, while parents unwind amidst the peaceful surroundings. The adjacent exotic garden and the shimmering lake further enhance the park's charm, making it a perfect escape from the city’s hustle and bustle.
