Villa Fünfland, Bregenz
Villa Fünfland was built in 1892 by the architect Georg Baumeister (1852–1927). It served as his own residence and became a model for upper-class living on the Ölrain terrace, an elevated area above the town centre. The villa played an important role in shaping what later became known as the Ölrain villa district, where Baumeister designed several neighbouring houses. The name “Fünfland” refers to the wide views from this location, which stretch across Lake Constance toward several surrounding countries.
The house is designed as a complex structure with several connected sections instead of a single block. Each part has its own cross-gabled roof, creating a varied outline. A rounded corner tower with a tented roof stands out clearly. The exterior features Tuscan columns, tall arched windows, and a spiral staircase, while the façade reflects Renaissance influence, inspired in part by the courtyard of the Constance Town Hall.
A special detail is the relief of the Madonna dated 1632, set into a round panel on the façade. Because it is much older than the villa, it was incorporated deliberately, linking the building to an earlier historical period. These features together show how Baumeister combined Renaissance inspiration, personal vision, and solid late-19th-century construction in this distinctive residence.
