Wat Charoen Samanakij, Phuket
The temple known as Wat Charoen Samanakij (also called Wat Lang San, meaning “temple behind the court”) rises on the slopes of Toh Sae Hill in Phuket Town, standing above the site of the former prison complex. Although its construction was completed in 2012, it has rapidly become both a place of worship and a visual landmark for visitors seeking something beyond beach life.
The temple’s architecture is distinctive: the complex consists of nine levels, each level symbolising a stage on the path to Buddhist enlightenment. On the topmost tier resides the main ordination hall, housing a large Buddha statue; the lower levels are occupied by smaller shrines, pavilions, and gardens, all arranged in a tiered layout that offers a layered sense of progression as one ascends.
Just below the newer structure lies the original ordination hall (ubosot) of the temple, built in 1968 and representing the spiritual heart of the earlier foundation from 1951. The older hall shows signs of weathering and quiet neglect-its faded glass mosaics and overgrown surroundings add an air of contemplative calm, contrasting with the gleaming modern complex above.
For travellers, Wat Charoen Samanakij offers more than photo-ops. It provides an opportunity to observe local devotion in action, enjoy panoramic views of the town from higher levels, and spend time in a peaceful setting away from the bustle of central Phuket. While modest dress and respectful behaviour are appropriate, the temple’s open atmosphere welcomes visitors to pause and absorb a different side of life on the island.
