Westminster Arcade, Providence

Westminster Arcade is a landmark of early American commercial architecture, completed in 1828 and recognized as the country’s oldest surviving enclosed shopping mall. Designed by Russell Warren and James Bucklin, the three-storey structure connects two parallel roads and presents a Greek Revival façade at each end. Six tall Ionic granite columns frame both entrances, giving the building the appearance of a classical temple.

Inside, a narrow central passage rises through three levels beneath a long skylight. Cast-iron balcony railings, brick walls, granite construction and mahogany details reflect the practical and decorative aims of its original design. Natural light falls through the glazed roof onto the former shopfronts, creating an arrangement that anticipated features later used in modern shopping centres. The building became a National Historic Landmark in 1976.

After periods of decline, closure and restoration, the arcade reopened in 2013 with a new mixed-use purpose. Small businesses and dining spaces occupy the ground floor, while former upper-level shops were converted into compact residences. Visitors can explore the public lower passage and its preserved 19th-century galleries; the upper floors are private residences.
