Craftland, Providence

Craftland is an independent shop and gallery devoted to handmade work by regional artists and designers. It began in 2002 as a seasonal holiday pop-up created to bring together people making unusual objects, artwork and gifts. The project later developed into a permanent year-round shop, becoming part of the area’s independent creative scene.

Inside, visitors will find a colourful mix of jewellery, art prints, greeting cards, ceramics, textiles, accessories and small decorative objects. Many pieces are made in Rhode Island and Massachusetts, while selected works come from independent makers elsewhere in the country. Some items feature local references, playful illustrations or unconventional designs, making the shop useful for travellers seeking souvenirs that are not mass-produced.

The collection is chosen through a juried application process, allowing the shop to present original work while supporting independent artists. Displays are arranged more like a compact gallery than a conventional gift store, with products grouped by colour, material or theme. The selection changes as new artists and limited-edition pieces are introduced, so visitors may encounter hand-printed stationery, sculptural objects, miniature artworks or locally inspired designs during different visits.
