Weyermann Specialty Malts, Bamberg

Weyermann Specialty Malts, Bamberg

Weyermann Specialty Malts, part of the historic Weyermann Malting of Bamberg, has established itself as one of the leading producers of German specialty malts. While they also produce pilsner and other base malts, their reputation shines through their series of specialties known as the "Cara" malts. One of their trademark offerings is Carapils, a pale dextrin malt renowned since 1908. Additionally, Weyermann is recognized for Carafa, a chocolaty roasted malt widely used in the production of dark beers. These specialty malts have become synonymous with quality and innovation in the brewing industry.

In addition to their esteemed Cara malts, Weyermann offers a diverse range of products to cater to brewers' varying needs. They have a line of organic malts, rye and wheat malts, and roasted unmalted grains. The inclusion of roasted unmalted grains is particularly notable due to the restrictions imposed by the German Purity Law (Reinheitsgebot), which limits the ingredients that can be used in German beer production. By offering these roasted unmalted grains, Weyermann enables brewers to create beers beyond the boundaries of German brewing traditions. Furthermore, the company produces a Reinheitsgebot-approved liquid coloring agent known as Sinamar, allowing brewers to enhance the appearance of their beers while adhering to the purity law.

The roots of Weyermann date back to 1879 when Johann Baptist Weyermann expanded his father's grain store to include a malt-roasting facility. Initially producing malt coffee, the facility soon incorporated a germination room for brewing malt production. Over the years, Weyermann underwent multiple expansions to meet the growing demand for its products. In 1902, a second facility was established in Potsdam, primarily focused on producing the malt-based Sinamar. Unfortunately, this plant was damaged during World War II and remained under Russian control, ultimately never reopening.
