Wilhelm-Busch-Museum, Hanover

Wilhelm-Busch-Museum, Hanover

The Wilhelm Busch Museum is dedicated to honoring the legacy of one of Germany's most beloved cartoonists, who is renowned for creating the iconic Max and Moritz comic strips. Whether you have a general interest in cartooning or a specific fascination with Wilhelm Busch himself, this museum offers a compelling experience. It boasts an impressive collection, featuring 300 oil paintings, 1200 sketches and drawings, and 49 cartoon stories. Additionally, you can explore a wealth of poems and letters penned by Busch, all thoughtfully displayed for visitors.

However, this museum isn't just about its contents; it's also a captivating historical site. Housed within the Georgenpalais, a Baroque palace constructed in 1780, the museum's location adds to its allure. The museum was established in 1930, but during World War II, the valuable artworks had to be evacuated to protect them from potential destruction. Unfortunately, the building suffered extensive damage during the war. Nevertheless, it was painstakingly restored, and in 1950, the museum welcomed visitors once again.

In addition to the works and life story of Wilhelm Busch, the museum features a diverse collection of art by international artists, along with a significant assortment of satirical art spanning four centuries. Furthermore, the museum hosts a dynamic array of events and temporary exhibitions, often showcasing renowned artists. Past exhibitions have included the works of luminaries like Walt Disney, such as Carl Barks, Grandville, Gottfried Helnwein, Hergé, Winsor McCay, and Roland Topor.
