Zum Roten Ochsen (restaurant), Heidelberg

Zum Roten Ochsen, meaning “The Red Ox,” is a historic inn and student tavern dating from 1703. The Spengel family acquired it in 1839 and now operates it in the sixth generation. For much of its history, the dining rooms served as meeting places for university students, associations and visiting academics, preserving a close link with local student culture.

Its interior functions almost like a small social-history collection. Dark wooden tables carry carved names and initials, while the walls display photographs, drawings, lithographs and signed mementos. Around 400 historical images document student groups, professors and prominent visitors from the mid-19th century onward. Old drinking horns, decorated beer steins, guest books and a surviving letter connected with Otto von Bismarck add further detail. Mark Twain is among the well-known guests represented in the restaurant’s records.

The menu offers German home-style dishes such as ox breast, roast pork, venison, schnitzel and Maultaschen, served with regional beer or wine. Vegetarian options such as cheese spaetzle, spinach dumplings or mushroom ragout are also offered. The compact rooms and dense displays reward a slow look, and booking ahead is sensible when visiting during busy periods.
