Alternative London Sights

Alternative London Sights, London, England

‘When a man is tired of London, he is tired of life’, as the saying goes - and it’s hard to argue. The list of main tourist attractions in this city is long enough in itself (see my Classic London post), and these may indeed be all that can be crammed into the itineraries of first-time tourists who are only in town for a few days.

But if you have a few days extra, or have done all the ‘must-sees‘ before, there is a multitude of other alternative London sights offering other great ways to soak up this amazing metropolis. Some of the options I mention here could almost as easily have been included among the mainstream attractions - the line is pretty blurry and subjective. In most cases, however, I believe they may be things that are slightly less of a priority for first-time tourists who will naturally be focusing more on Buckingham Palace, Big Ben & co., but which are still likely to enrich any trip to the British capital.

N.B.: This post does not talk about the city’s prevalent and colourful street art, because there’s a separate blog post for that here.

Twinings Tiny Tea Shop in London

The Twinings (rhymes with signings) shop at 216 Strand is easy to miss. It’s a pint-sized place squeezed between two ample edifices, and its facade is basically no wider than its double-door entry.

Walking Guide to Roman London

London is nearly 2,000 years old, founded by the Romans on the North Bank of the Thames. It grew to become the capital of Roman Britain, and its name even comes from this era: Londinium. But compared to similarly old cities, very little remains. Rome has, of course, the Colosseum, the Forum and much more besides. In Nimes, the Roman arena still hosts events. In Zaragoza, you can visit a huge...  view more

Graffiti and Mosaics: Street Art of the South Bank, London

Exploring the street art is just one of many unique things to do in London. The art is everywhere: vibrant graffiti, colourful murals and even carefully crafted mosaics. You’ll find it on the sides on buildings, on old walls, and beneath once-neglected railway arches. I spent some time exploring the street art of the South Bank, some of it ever-changing, and some more permanent.

Ealing, the Queen of the Suburbs?

Ealing, the Queen of the Suburbs?

In 1902 Charles Jones, Ealing’s borough surveyor, published a book. In it he referred to Ealing as the ‘Queen of Suburbs’. His aim of course was to promote the area as a place to live.
Ealing, he said, could claim to be the best of all worlds. It was near London and easily reached by excellent railway facilities, but it was also close to the countryside.
