Cinque Terre (Manarola), Cinque Terre, Italy
Our day started off with breakfast in the community room at our Hotel La Spiaggia in Monterosso. Hearty and filling, just what we needed before a full day of hiking.
Our original plan was to start our day by taking the boat from Monterosso to Riomaggiore, thus having the opportunity to see all five villages of Cinque Terre from the water. Unfortunately, the sea conditions were too rough and the ferry was suspended for the entire three days we were in Cinque Terre.
So instead we took the train from Monterosso to Manarola, the smallest of the five villages that make up Cinque Terre and explore that town.
Trains between the five villages run every 30 minutes or so in both directions for €4. Tickets can be purchased at the time of the ride but with the additional step of having to validate these single ride tickets we opted to buy ahead of time.
We purchased the Cinque Terre Card + Train before we left the US for €29 per person good for two days. This gave us unlimited train rides, and was also our required pass to hike from village to village. An added bonus, this pass could also be used as a free toilet pass. Flash this ticket at most public toilets in Cinque Terre and you get behind the turnstile for free. That is a saving of €1 per pee! Insider Tips for Cinque Terre, Italy
The Coastal Trail from Monterosso to Vernazza
Oh what day again! It took me nearly 30 minutes to walk down all the stairs, around the footpath, order warm chocolate croissants and coffee, and make the trek all the way back up to our “penthouse suite.” I worked off my croissant calories before I even sat down!
Cinque Terre (Walk Corniglia to Vernazza)
We are up early and head downstairs to another hearty breakfast at the Hotel La Spiaggia. This would be our last day to explore Cinque Terre and we had another full day of hiking ahead of us. Our plan is to take the train to Corniglia and walk the coast trail to Vernazza.
Cinque Terre (Riomaggiore)
After taking the train from Manarola we exit the train station at the most southern of the five villages, Riomaggiore. From the station walk toward the pedestrian tunnel. At the end of the pedestrian tunnel turn left on to the via Colombo where you will find most of the options for dining in Riomaggiore.
Cinque Terre (Monterosso Al Mare)
Exit at Monterosso, there are more stairs as the elevator was, of course, fuori servizio. Thankfully our hotel is just a few blocks from the station. Take a right on the via Fegina and roll our suitcases a few blocks to the Hotel La Spiaggia located at via Fegina 100 (shown above). When we arrive they greet us with a glass of wine!
Rounding out Cinque Terre…Riomaggiore and Corniglia
Our original plan was to visit Riomaggiore and then turn the other direction, passing Manarola to Corniglia before finally ending the day on a sunset boat ride in Levanto. This was going to take more than six hours, so we purchased individual tickets.
Cinque Terre (Walk Vernazza to Monterosso)
We are not going to explore Vernazza today, so from the train station at Vernazza, walk under the tracks into the village onto via Roma the main street. Continue walking along via Roma about three hundred yards.
