Cinque Terre (Monterosso Al Mare), Cinque Terre, Italy
Momboisse Family Adventure Fall 2019 was a 3-1/2 week adventure of a lifetime. A pilgrimage to Italy, Montenegro, Croatia, Greece, Lourdes France, Spain and Fatima Portugal. But a tiny, well maybe not so tiny, detached retina caused us to bag our trip after six days. Good news, the re-attachment surgery was successful and sight was saved! Praise God and modern medicine.
This blog and subsequent parts 2 through 7 to this blog chronicle the incredible six fabulous days Mike and I had touring and hiking Cinque Terre, Italy and Kotor, Montenegro.
Eight hours after leaving Washington, Dulles airport we landed early in the morning on September 29, 2019 at Fiumicino Airport Rome.
Breezed through passport control (sorry no pictures, against the law) and we are on our way to the Fiumicino Airport Train Station located in the Fiumicino Airport across from Terminal 3.
Follow the signs overhead in the terminal with a picture of a train. Or just ask someone. We found everyone to be very friendly and eager to help especially when we appeared lost and confused.
The first leg of our train ride was via the Leonardo Express. These trains leave every 30 minutes and are a 35 minute non-stop ride to the Roma Termini, the main railway station in Rome. We had purchased all of our train tickets on line ahead of time through Trenitalia. ...... (follow the instructions below for accessing the rest of this article).

Insider Tips for Cinque Terre, Italy
Cinque Terre (Manarola)
Our original plan was to start our day by taking the boat from Monterosso to Riomaggiore, thus having the opportunity to see all five villages of Cinque Terre from the water. Cinque Terre (Riomaggiore)
After taking the train from Manarola we exit the train station at the most southern of the five villages, Riomaggiore. From the station walk toward the pedestrian tunnel. At the end of the pedestrian tunnel turn left on to the via Colombo where you will find most of the options for dining in Riomaggiore.
Cinque Terre (Walk Vernazza to Monterosso)
We are not going to explore Vernazza today, so from the train station at Vernazza, walk under the tracks into the village onto via Roma the main street. Continue walking along via Roma about three hundred yards. The Coastal Trail from Monterosso to Vernazza
Oh what day again! It took me nearly 30 minutes to walk down all the stairs, around the footpath, order warm chocolate croissants and coffee, and make the trek all the way back up to our “penthouse suite.” I worked off my croissant calories before I even sat down!
Exploring the Five Villages in Cinque Terre
Perched high atop the steep, rocky coastline of the Ligurian Sea lie the Cinque Terre, five breathtaking colorful Italian fishing villages dating back to the 11th Century. Established as a national park and UNESCO World Heritage site in 1999, the Cinque Terre National Park may be the smallest park in Italy but is perhaps the most unique.
Rounding out Cinque Terre…Riomaggiore and Corniglia
Our original plan was to visit Riomaggiore and then turn the other direction, passing Manarola to Corniglia before finally ending the day on a sunset boat ride in Levanto. This was going to take more than six hours, so we purchased individual tickets.
