Cinque Terre (Walk Vernazza to Monterosso), Cinque Terre, Italy
We are not going to explore Vernazza today, so from the train station at Vernazza, walk under the tracks into the village onto via Roma the main street.
Continue walking along via Roma about three hundred yards. When you get to the location between the Focacceria on your right and the green cross of the Farmacia on your left you have arrived at the trail heads to both Monterosso and Corniglia.
We are on our way to Monterosso so our trail head will be on our right. The picture below is what the entrance looks like.
This trail is about 2 miles long and should take the average hiker 1 hour. We are apparently not the average hiker as it took us 3 hours.
The climb is about 600 feet which isn't really bad, except that it is on uneven stone stairs. The weather was perfect for hiking not too warm and a bit of overcast that came and went quite quickly.
On the Googlemap the path is about 1/4 inch up from the sea. All in all this is definitely worth the adventure!
Periodically you will peek out between buildings to get a glimpse of the small harbor and Belforte Tower in the distance. Tomorrow we will be back here in Vernazza. Insider Tips for Cinque Terre, Italy
Cinque Terre (Riomaggiore)
After taking the train from Manarola we exit the train station at the most southern of the five villages, Riomaggiore. From the station walk toward the pedestrian tunnel. At the end of the pedestrian tunnel turn left on to the via Colombo where you will find most of the options for dining in Riomaggiore.
The Coastal Trail from Monterosso to Vernazza
Oh what day again! It took me nearly 30 minutes to walk down all the stairs, around the footpath, order warm chocolate croissants and coffee, and make the trek all the way back up to our “penthouse suite.” I worked off my croissant calories before I even sat down!
Cinque Terre (Walk Corniglia to Vernazza)
We are up early and head downstairs to another hearty breakfast at the Hotel La Spiaggia. This would be our last day to explore Cinque Terre and we had another full day of hiking ahead of us. Our plan is to take the train to Corniglia and walk the coast trail to Vernazza.
Exploring the Five Villages in Cinque Terre
Perched high atop the steep, rocky coastline of the Ligurian Sea lie the Cinque Terre, five breathtaking colorful Italian fishing villages dating back to the 11th Century. Established as a national park and UNESCO World Heritage site in 1999, the Cinque Terre National Park may be the smallest park in Italy but is perhaps the most unique.
Rounding out Cinque Terre…Riomaggiore and Corniglia
Our original plan was to visit Riomaggiore and then turn the other direction, passing Manarola to Corniglia before finally ending the day on a sunset boat ride in Levanto. This was going to take more than six hours, so we purchased individual tickets.
Cinque Terre (Monterosso Al Mare)
Exit at Monterosso, there are more stairs as the elevator was, of course, fuori servizio. Thankfully our hotel is just a few blocks from the station. Take a right on the via Fegina and roll our suitcases a few blocks to the Hotel La Spiaggia located at via Fegina 100 (shown above). When we arrive they greet us with a glass of wine!
