Touring Krakow with a Local, Krakow, Poland
Touring a foreign city with a local allows you to not only see the sites but delve further into its history, its culture and begin to understand its personality. We were able to do just that recently as we toured Kraków, Poland’s famous historical city.
Monkey’s Tale photographer, Richard, grew up in Poland and spent his university years in Kraków. He ‘volunteered’ to be a tour guide on our recent trip to his hometown sharing with Maggie its history, myths and legends.
Kraków was the capital of Poland from 1038 until 1596 when it was relocated to Warsaw by a Swedish king. Its Old Town was not destroyed during WWII therefore its historic centre is filled with original architecture. It’s so impressive in fact, that the entire historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Of course all of that history is also draped in fascinating stories.
Like many cities of its time, a 13th century defensive wall surrounded Krakow’s Old Town. In its 4 km (2 1/2 mile) length, there were 47 towers and 8 gates. Due to maintenance costs and lack of need, in the 19th century most of the wall was dismantled. In its place, the city turned it into a park that wraps around Old Town. Planty Park has a walking/biking path between the tall trees and is a really lovely use of the land. ...... (follow the instructions below for accessing the rest of this article).

Insider Tips for Krakow, Poland
Outstanding Museums in Krakow
Krakow has so many good museums! Every exhibition I saw in Krakow seriously impressed me with its high standards. I knew little about the city and about Polish culture before visiting, but Krakow’s museums make the learning experience fascinating.
Krakow: Highlights of the Old Town
The city of Krakow preserved medieval Old Town, where you can find most of the places of interest of this Unesco World Heritage city, is one of the few places in Poland that escaped from complete destruction during World War II.
Krakow Street Food
After I travel a while, I get tired of eating every meal at a restaurant, particularly in Europe where the service is slow. I recognize it is slow to allow diners to enjoy their meal, but when I am on my own, sitting around is not my first choice.
Exploring Kazimierz in Krakow
Most of the points of interest can be found in Kazimierz, the former Jewish quarter of Krakow. Since the area is pretty small, all of them are located within a few minutes walk from each other.
Best of Krakow in Three Days!
I call the post devoted to the best of Kraków in three days enjoyable and challenging. Indeed, although small in size (about 750,000 people live in Krakow), the Polish city offers so many things to see and do. Its small size makes it easy to visit: almost all the places I describe are within easy walking distance.
Krakow Design Guide
In this guide I share some of the best and most aesthetic shops and galleries I found during my visit to Krakow. It features graphic and interior design, fashion, illustration and places to shop for original gifts.
