Raleigh, North Carolina, bears the name of an Englishman who never set foot here. Sir Walter Raleigh, a courtier, writer, soldier, and explorer during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I, sponsored England’s early attempts to establish a colony in North America. In 1585, an expedition sponsored by Raleigh established the Roanoke Colony on an island off the coast of present-day North Carolina. The settlement eventually disappeared, becoming known as the “Lost Colony.” More than two centuries later, when North Carolina needed a new capital, the legislature named it Raleigh in his honor.

Raleigh became North Carolina’s capital in 1792, replacing New Bern. The new city was deliberately planned around a central square, with broad streets radiating outward from the State Capitol.
