1000 Broadway, Portland

1000 Broadway, Portland

1000 Broadway is a 24-storey office tower completed in 1991 and one of the tallest modern buildings in the downtown skyline. Rising about 88 metres (289 feet), it was developed during a period of renewed investment in the city centre. Designed by BOORA and built for about $90 million, the tower is recognised by the distinctive series of large metal rings forming its rooftop crown, a feature that has earned it the local nickname "Ban Roll-on Building."

Near theatres, museums, public squares, and shops, the office tower is surrounded by cafés, restaurants, and steady pedestrian activity. Upper floors enjoy broad views across the downtown skyline, nearby hills, and, on clear days, distant mountain peaks. The building was also the first major high-rise developed by local businessman and cinema entrepreneur Tom Moyer, marking an important milestone in his real estate career.

Before construction, the site was occupied by the 1926 Broadway Theater, a popular Art Deco cinema. Its demolition sparked public debate, and early plans proposed preserving the theatre's historic marquee within the new façade, although the idea was eventually abandoned. The building later included a four-screen cinema, operated by Regal until 2011, and has remained under the same family's ownership for three generations.
