Congress Center, Portland

Congress Center is a 23-storey office tower completed in 1980 during a period of modern commercial development in the downtown business district. Designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, it rises about 98 metres (322 feet) and is distinguished by dark reflective glass curtain walls that mirror nearby buildings and changing skies. Its name recalls the Congress Hotel, which opened on the site in 1912 and was demolished in 1977.

Four ornate terracotta arches from the former hotel were preserved and reconstructed to frame the entrance of a lower-level restaurant. Decorated with sculpted figures, they provide a visible link to the earlier building. The hotel was one of the area’s first reinforced-concrete structures and promoted itself through a large painted advertisement declaring it “100% Fireproof.” The office tower later received energy-efficiency upgrades, LEED Gold certification, and a high Energy Star rating.

Congress Center stands opposite the Portland Building, creating a strong contrast between reflective corporate modernism and colourful Postmodern design. Its glass façade often mirrors the shapes and details of the neighbouring landmark. Nearby MAX Light Rail stations provide convenient access to museums, theatres, public squares, and shops.
