228 Memorial Museum, Taipei

The 228 Peace Memorial is an important historical site and public park located on Ketagalan Boulevard in Zhongzheng District, Taipei. This place serves as a memorial to commemorate the tragic events of the February 28 Incident that took place in 1947. Key attractions within the park include the 228 Memorial Monument, which is centrally positioned, and the Taipei 228 Memorial Museum. The museum is housed in the former building that once served as a radio station during both the Japanese colonial period and the rule of the Kuomintang government.

In 1947, a group of protestors, outraged by a brutal police crackdown on Taiwanese civilians, occupied the radio station and utilized it to broadcast accusations against the Kuomintang government. This event is now part of a series of incidents collectively known as the February 28 Incident.

In the 1990s, as Taiwan became a modern democracy, President Lee Teng-hui formally apologized in 1995 for the February 28 Incident of 1947, initiating open discussions on Taiwan's history. In 1996, the former radio station building was designated a historical site, later becoming the Taipei 228 Memorial Museum in 1998, and the park was renamed 228 Peace Memorial Park.

The Taipei 228 Memorial Museum serves the dual purpose of disseminating historical documents and providing solace to the families affected by the 228 Incident. The hope is that by establishing this memorial hall, it will enable people to find closure for the wounds inflicted by the tragic event and harness their collective suffering as a catalyst for progress and innovation, ultimately revitalizing the Taiwanese society's overall well-being.
