45th Infantry Division Museum, Oklahoma City

45th Infantry Division Museum, Oklahoma City (must see)

The 45th Infantry Museum honors the infantry unit that was one of the first deployed during World War II and responsible for liberating the Dachau concentration camp. Thunderbird Park, which surrounds the museum, has 15 acres of equipment that the unit has used in their campaigns. Tanks and aircraft are some of the equipment here, and there is a monument.

Some of the exhibits include a military weapons collection, a collection that details the liberation of Dachau, and a collection of cartoons by Bill Mauldin. The Commanders Hall commemorates the unit's Medal of Honor recipients who served in World War II and Korea. Some of the displays that help tell these men's' stories include dioramas depicting their actions in combat and copies of the Medal of Honor citations.

The chapel highlights religious artifacts that show the critical role that chaplains played. Visitors will also enjoy the Hall of Flags for its close look at Oklahoma's military history role from its time as an Indian territory to World War I.
