A Famosa Fort, Melaka

A Famosa was a Portuguese fortress built in 1512. Although it now lies mostly in ruins, the surviving structures remain an important part of Melaka’s history. The Portuguese controlled the fortress from its construction until 1641, when it was captured by the Dutch. The Dutch held it until 1795 and made several changes to the complex. The British then took control and demolished most of the fortress in 1807.

At its height, A Famosa was surrounded by thick defensive walls and included four major towers, soldiers’ quarters, storage rooms, houses, and a tall keep overlooking the harbor. The best-known surviving section is the small gatehouse known as Santiago Gate. A restored bastion has also been uncovered. The fortress once had reinforced outer walls, four major towers, and a five-story keep. One of its towers was the tallest structure in the area until it was destroyed by Dutch forces in 1641.

Surviving portions of the fortress were restored between 2004 and 2006. Visitors can explore Santiago Gate and the restored bastion at any time of day.
