Proclaimation of Independence Memorial, Melaka

The Proclamation of Independence Memorial is a museum devoted to Malaysia’s colonial history and its struggle for self-government. Its exhibitions trace the country’s development from the era of the Malacca Sultanate through Portuguese, Dutch, and British rule, followed by the independence of Malaya in 1957 and the formation of Malaysia in 1963. Displays include historical documents, photographs, maps, newspaper reports, artifacts, and dioramas illustrating important events and political figures.

The memorial is particularly significant because it stands beside Padang Bandar Hilir, the field where Tunku Abdul Rahman addressed a large crowd on 20 February 1956 after returning from independence negotiations in London. There, he announced that Malaya would gain independence on 31 August 1957.

The building was erected in 1912 and displays a mixture of British and Dutch colonial influences. Its white stucco façade, arched veranda, and two golden onion-shaped domes make it easy to recognize. It formerly housed the Malacca Club, a social center used by British officials and residents during the colonial period.

The memorial was officially opened by Tunku Abdul Rahman, Malaysia’s first prime minister, on 31 August 1985, exactly 28 years after independence. Its indoor displays explain the negotiations, political movements, and public campaigns that led to the end of British rule, as well as the country’s subsequent development.

Outdoor exhibits complement the museum’s photographs and dioramas. Among them are two armored police vehicles and a 1957 Chevrolet sedan associated with Tunku Abdul Rahman.
