Academic Drama Theatre, Baku
The Azerbaijan State Academic National Drama Theatre, established in 1873, stands as the oldest modern theatre in Azerbaijan and a leading cultural institution in Baku. This historical theatre is named in honor of Mirza Fatali Akhundov, regarded as the founder of modern Azerbaijani literature. The theatre's rich heritage began with its first performance, "Vizier of Lankaran khanate" by M.F. Akhundov, staged on March 10, 1873. This event, led by Hasan Bey Zardabi and involving students from the Real School of Baku, marked the birth of professional Azerbaijani theatre.
Over the years, the theatre has had multiple names due to regional political and cultural changes. Originally "State Theatre," it later became "United State Theatre" and "Azerbaijani Turkic Drama Theatre." Between 1923 and 1933, it was named after Dadash Bunyatzade, then Meshadi Azizbekov until 1991. Post-independence, it received its current name.
The theatre's current building, an architectural landmark designed in 1919, is situated on Fuzūlī Avenue in Baku. This venue has hosted a plethora of Azerbaijan's theatrical talents including Mirzaga Aliev, Sidgi Ruhula, and Leyla Badirbeyli, among others. The repertoire is diverse, featuring works by Azerbaijani luminaries such as Jafar Jabbarli and Najaf bey Vazirov, as well as international classics by Shakespeare, Molière, and Tolstoy.
Throughout the Soviet period, the theatre was lauded with numerous awards for its artistic excellence. It continues to maintain a vibrant presence in the arts scene, both locally and internationally, with tours in cities across Russia, Central Asia, Turkey, Germany, and Cyprus. The theatre's commitment to showcasing Azerbaijani and world literature ensures its ongoing relevance and cultural significance.
