Gasim Bey Mosque, Baku

The Gasim Bey Mosque in Baku is a significant architectural and cultural monument reflecting the rich historical tapestry of the region. Built between 1892 and 1896, this mosque is located on Hazı Aslanov Street in the Yasamal district of Baku. Designed by architect Mashadi Mirza Ghafar Ismayilov and commissioned by Gasım Bey, the mosque is a testament to the architectural styles and religious practices of the late 19th century in Azerbaijan.

During the Soviet era, particularly starting in 1928, Azerbaijan experienced extensive anti-religious campaigns that led to the repurposing of many religious buildings, including mosques, for secular uses. By 1933, the number of mosques in Azerbaijan had dramatically decreased from about 3,000 in 1917 to only 17. However, following the country's regaining of independence, the Gasimbey Mosque was among the religious structures whose significance was recognized and protected. In 1992, the mosque resumed its religious activities and was officially registered as a religious community.

The mosque spans 330 square meters, with a 250 square meter interior and a 31-meter tall minaret with a rectangular base, decorated with arched stalactites and Quranic inscriptions, topped by a metal dome. It has a main entrance with five 3-meter high mihrab-shaped wooden windows. Inside, a women's alcove overlooks the main prayer hall, supported by four large stone columns and twelve decorative bricks. The hall's 6-meter wide dome, adorned with geometric and floral designs and eight windows, features the "Shahada" inscription seven times around its circumference, and the central mihrab displays excerpts from the "Jumu'ah" chapter.

Today, the Gasim Bey Mosque stands not only as a place of worship but also as a cultural landmark that reflects Azerbaijan's historical resilience and religious heritage.
