Ai He (Love River), Kaohsiung
Once known for its industrial past, the Love River has been transformed into a peaceful, scenic waterway lined with verdant parks and cultural landmarks. Stretching over 16 kilometers, it connects several districts, providing a lush corridor for leisure and sightseeing. Prominent structures such as the Holy Rosary Cathedral, Kaohsiung Bridge, and the historic District Court add charm to its banks, making it an ideal setting for daytime walks and nighttime excursions alike.
The riverbanks bustle with life, especially in the evenings. Love River Park, located downtown, becomes a hub of activity with its night market, live music, and three outdoor cafés. Boat rides for groups of around fifteen glide along the river, offering a close-up view of the city’s skyline and its warm ambiance. Cultural events like open-air concerts and the Lantern Festival are often organised. From duck boats to themed “love boats,” there are plenty of ways to experience the river from the water, including the charming gondola ride- a touch of Venetian romance in Taiwan.
Midway along the river lies the Heart of Love River. The eastern lake, shallow and teeming with aquatic life, recreates a natural environment, while the deeper western lake functions as a boat docking area and plays a role in flood detention. A bridge spans the two lakes, forming a heart shape that glows beautifully at night under artfully placed lighting. The site covers about 1.4 square kilometers and includes walking paths, landscaped gardens, and open spaces for public events.
