Akshardham Temple, Delhi (must see)

The Akshardham complex in Delhi is a captivating representation of traditional Hindu and Indian culture, spirituality, and architecture, attracting tourists from around the world. This magnificent temple holds the esteemed title of being the largest Hindu temple globally, a distinction recognized in the Guinness Book of Records. Set on the serene banks of the holy river Yamuna, the sprawling complex covers an impressive area of 86,342 square feet.

Dedicated to Lord Swaminarayan, the main deity of the temple, a towering 141-foot statue stands as a symbol of devotion and reverence. Constructed by Pramukh Swami Maharaj, the spiritual leader of BAPS, the temple follows a Vedic design and showcases an exquisite blend of pink sandstone and white marble, representing purity and piety.

An extraordinary feat of artistry, the grand temple was meticulously hand-carved by 11,000 skilled artisans and devoted volunteers within a remarkable span of five years, all without the use of structural steel. Its consecration took place on 6 November 2005, a significant occasion celebrated by many.

The temple stands atop 148 magnificent elephant statues, surrounded by a double-storied arcade adorned with intricately etched tales from the epics. Within its sacred halls, visitors can marvel at 234 elaborately carved pillars and behold the awe-inspiring collection of around 20,000 statues depicting various Hindu gods and goddesses.

Beyond the religious and architectural wonders, the Akshardham complex offers much more to explore. Visitors can delve into two expansive exhibition halls, savor the flavors of the canteen, immerse themselves in a cinematic experience, and be enchanted by the enchanting musical fountain and lush gardens that adorn the surroundings.

Adding to its significance, the temple complex houses a center for applied research in social harmony. This institution conducts studies on social harmony and related subjects, embodying the spirit of unity and understanding.
