Allan Green Conservatory, Perth

Allan Green Conservatory, Perth

The Allan Green Conservatory, once a notable landmark in Perth, Western Australia, was a pyramid-shaped botanical display facility situated on the Esplanade Reserve. Established in 1979, the conservatory was created as part of Western Australia's 150th-anniversary celebrations, serving as a unique public showcase for exotic tropical plants and rare palms that are uncommon in Perth's natural environment. The design featured internal elevated pathways, allowing visitors to explore the diverse plant collection from various vantage points.

The conservatory was named in honor of William Allan McInnes Green, a dedicated town clerk and chief executive officer of the City of Perth, acknowledging his significant contributions to the city's administrative and civic development over many years.

Despite its initial popularity, the Allan Green Conservatory experienced a gradual decline in patronage beginning around 1996. By 2006, the City of Perth had closed the facility, contemplating its redevelopment into a café or restaurant to revitalize interest. After assessing commercial potential, the facility was closed indefinitely due to the State Government's development plans for the Esplanade Reserve. The conservatory was demolished in June 2012 to accommodate the Elizabeth Quay project. In recognition of its historical significance and the role it played in Perth's cultural landscape, plans were proposed to memorialize the Allan Green Conservatory and other heritage elements of the site with signage, ensuring that its memory continues to be part of the city's evolving narrative.
